RFL Spring Flag FAQ

What exactly is Spring Flag?

Spring Flag is a low intensity, recreational game with fun as the primary goal.

How Does Spring Flag differ from Fall Football?

There is no relationship between Fall  Football and the Spring game for ages 6&U, 8&U and 10&U. There are 5 player per team on the field that is divided into segments which determine whether the offense can run or pass.  It is a fast paced and usually high scoring game.  13&U play 7 on 7 touch football with the primary goal of working on passing, catching and pass defense skills that will pay off in the Fall.  Once again there is no contact.

How do I register and what does it cost?

All registration is done on-line at www.rfl.cc.  Beginning February 1 there will be a large link at the top of the home page to access the registration process.  You will need a credit card or personal check to pay the registration fee which is $95.00.  If you have played in the RFL before make sure you use your existing registration account.  Your User Name is your email address.  If you forgot your password you can retrieve it once you get to the log-in page.

What if I decide not to play after I register?

Refunds, less a $25 processing fee will be credited up to March 15.

When and where are practice and games?

The Spring Flag Season will start in April.  Practice can begin after April 1.  Teams are allowed three (3) practices between April 1 and the start of the season in mid April.  Once the season starts there is one (1) practice allowed per week.  Many coaches simply gather their teams an hour before game time to run plays and do not practice during the week at all once the season starts.  Practice day, time and location is up to each individual coach.  The RFL cannot tell you when each team practices.

Games will begin in mid April and are played on Sunday afternoons at Mattie Stepanek on Gaither and Redland Rd in King Farm.  Game times are between noon and 5:00 PM with the younger groups playing the earlier times.  Games are played every Sunday except Easter and Memorial Day Weekend.

How do I know what age group to sign up for?

The age cut-off for each group is February 1.  If you are 10 on February 1 then you can play 10&U.  If you are 11 you must play 13&U.  Spring ball is age only there are no weight limits.  Players can play up one age group with the older group coach's approval.

How are players assigned to teams?

Once again there is no formal relationship to Fall teams.  There are no Bears, Panthers, Wolverines etc.  There are no geographic territory requirements or year to year team mandatory assignment like the Fall.

6&U are not assigned to teams.  6&U players must be in kindergarten or older grade. This division is very instructional with emphasis on fundamentals.  Players are divided into teams each week for games so the competitive level is as fair as possible.

Players can either form their own team if there is a coach or be assigned to an existing team.  Every attempt is made to accommodate friends that want to play together .  During the on-line registration process there is opportunity to request a specific coach or players to be placed with.  To be assigned with friends enter their names in the Team request box and we will do our best to fill your request.

What are the requirements for coaches?

Coaches must be NYSCA certified and pass an FBI background check and On-Line Concussion Awareness Course.  Football and prior team sport coaching experience is a plus but the Commissioner will mentor and provide playbooks and technique material to first year coaches.

What Equipment do I need?

The league will provide team shirts, flags and one mouth guard.  Players must wear shorts, sweat or warm-up pants or football pants without pads and either football cleats, soccer cleats or sneakers.  Street shoes, boots or baseball cleats are prohibited.

What if I play another Spring sport that may conflict if there are make-up games or regular games scheduled on some Sundays?

We understand that regular spring sports such as lacrosse and baseball are the priority.  As long as you can make most of the games and let your coach know when you might miss a game it should work out fine.

 RFL Spring Tackle FAQ

What exactly is Spring Tackle Football?

Spring Tackle Football is 8-on-8 indoor tackle football.  It is designed for “off season” fun, honing new skills, working with new coaches and new systems, and playing the fall game that we all love with an indoor twist.

How Does Spring Tackle Football differ from Fall Football?

There is no relationship between Fall Football teams and Spring Tackle Football.  The Spring Teams have no affiliation with RFL geographical boundaries or league teams.  This is INTER league play; based on registration numbers, the RFL will register 10U, 12U, 13U and 15U teams in the  Maryland Youth Football League (not affiliated with the RFL).  There are no weight requirements.  Age groups may be combined depending upon registration numbers.

How do I register and what does it cost?

All registration is done on-line at www.rfl.cc.  Beginning February 1 there will be a large link at the top of the home page to access the registration process.  You will need a credit card or personal check to pay the registration fee which is $125.  If you have played in the RFL before, make sure you use your existing registration account.  Your User Name is your email address.  If you forgot your password, you can retrieve it once you get to the log-in page.

What if I decide not to play after I register?

Refunds, less a $25 processing fee, will be credited up to March 5.

When and where are practice and games?

The Spring Tackle Football Season will start in April.  Practices will begin as soon as equipment can be distributed.  This is tackle football so it is important that the teams get together before the start of the season and through the first couple of games to learn plays, organize positions, and prepare for hitting, blocking and tackling.

Games will begin in mid April and are played on the weekends.  Last year, the games were played at indoor sport complexes in Rockville, Laurel, and Frederick.

How do I know what age group to sign up for?

The age cut-off for each group is August 31, 2011 (ex: if you were 10 on 8/31/2010 but have turned 11 since you can still play 10U)

How are players assigned to teams?

Once again there is no formal relationship to Fall teams.  There are no Bears, Panthers, Wolverines etc.  There are no geographic territory requirements or year to year team mandatory assignments like the Fall.  Players are assigned to teams based on age and coach requests.  You can request to be placed with age appropriate friends by putting their names in the Team Request box.

What are the requirements for coaches?

Coaches must be NYSCA certified and pass an FBI background check and On-Line Concussion Awareness Course.

What Equipment do I need?

The league will provide helmets, shoulder pads, game jerseys and one mouth guard.  Players must supply football cleats, pant’s pads, and practice pants and jersey.

What if I play another Spring sport that may conflict if there are make-up games or regular games scheduled on some Sundays?

We understand that regular spring sports such as lacrosse and baseball are the priority.  For tackle football, it will take 2-3 weeks to get the teams up to speed as they come together and prepare for the first couple of games, but practices after that should not be more than 1-2 times per week.  As long as you can make most of the games and practices, let your coach know when you might miss a game and it should work out fine.
